Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychotherapist?

  • The world of mental health can feel like an alphabet soup of titles—so here’s a quick guide:

  •

  • Counsellors help with life’s challenges—like stress, loss, or relationships—and their training can range from diplomas to master’s degrees. They may be trained in other specialised approaches.

  • Psychologists have advanced degrees in psychology and work with mental health concerns using talk therapy, but they don’t prescribe medication.

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health—they can diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication.

  • Psychotherapists (like myself) with a Masters Degree also have advanced trainings in deep, transformative talk/expressive therapies as well as other modalities. We often work longer-term to support emotional healing and personal growth.
